Now, one would think that in order to produce Piebald Dachshunds that you would need two piebald dachshunds to breed together. Well, that is true but there are more options. You can breed a Piebald Dachshund to a dog that "carries" for Piebald or you can breed two Dachshunds together that both carry for Piebald. To Carry for something means that the dog had parents or grandparents that were Piebalds and they passed this recessive gene down to their offspring. In order to find out if your dog carries Piebald, first talk to your breeder. Any reputable breeder will have a good grasp on what their dogs carry for. You can also order pedigrees for your dog from their registry. I think it's important to note that even if a dog has Piebald far back in their lineage it does not always mean that they will carry the gene themselves. There are sometimes white markings on your dog that can be a good indicator that they carry Piebald, but be careful breeding two dogs "blindly" like that. They could be dapple markings instead.
